Men's Waxing

Men's Waxing in Rainford, St Helens

Back, chest and brow waxing for men, in a private treatment room, by appointment.

Plenty of men have thought about getting waxed for a year or two before they book. If that is you, the short version is this: it takes less time than you think, nobody in the room finds it remarkable, and the result lasts weeks rather than the day or two you get from a razor.

Hannah Clarke is a skin and beauty salon in Rainford, a few minutes from St Helens, and men are booked in the same as anyone else.

How Long Your Hair Needs to Be

Wax needs something to grip. As a rule, leave it about two to three weeks from your last shave, which usually gives around a quarter of an inch, or 5mm, of growth. Much shorter and the wax cannot lift it. Much longer is not a problem, it is just slightly more uncomfortable.

If you have shaved in the last few days, it is worth moving your appointment rather than turning up and finding out.

What Happens at Your Appointment

You are in a private treatment room with the door closed. You take off your top for a back or chest wax, lie on the treatment bed, and that is the extent of the undressing.

The wax is applied in sections and removed section by section, working across the area. A back takes somewhere in the region of twenty to thirty minutes, a chest similar, brows a few minutes. Afterwards a soothing product goes on the area and you get dressed and go.

There is no conversation about why you are there unless you want one.

Does It Hurt?

Yes, a bit, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. It is a sharp sting that lasts a second or two per section, and it fades almost immediately. Most men find the first one the worst, partly because they are braced for it, and find each subsequent appointment easier as the regrowth comes back finer.

The back is generally more comfortable than people expect. The chest, and anywhere over bone, is sharper. If you want to take a paracetamol an hour beforehand, that is fine.

Aftercare

The area will look pink for a few hours, sometimes into the next day. That is normal.

For the first 24 to 48 hours, avoid anything that adds heat or friction: no sauna, steam room or sunbeds, no swimming, no heavy gym session, no very hot showers, and no fake tan on the area. Keep the area clean and leave heavily fragranced products off it.

From about 48 hours onward, start exfoliating gently two or three times a week. This is the single thing that prevents ingrown hairs, and it is the step most men skip. A rough mitt or a simple exfoliating wash in the shower is enough. If you do get the odd ingrown hair, keep exfoliating and moisturising and do not pick at it.

How Long It Lasts and How Often to Come Back

Waxing removes the hair from the root, so you are looking at roughly four to six weeks before it needs doing again, rather than the day or two you get from shaving. Exactly where you land depends on how fast your hair grows.

If you keep to a regular pattern rather than letting it grow right out between appointments, the regrowth tends to come back finer and the appointments get more comfortable over time.

Waxing, Shaving or Laser?

Shaving is free and immediate, and it lasts a day or two. On a back it is also close to impossible to do yourself.

WaxingLasts four to six weeks, leaves no stubble, and costs you one appointment every month or so, ongoing, for as long as you want to stay hair free.
Laser hair removalIs the option that ends the cycle. A course of six to twelve sessions gives permanent hair reduction, meaning significantly less hair, growing finer and slower, with a top-up session every three or four months after that. It costs more upfront and it only works on hair that carries pigment, so dark hair responds and blonde, red or grey does not.

A lot of men start with waxing and move to laser once they get tired of the monthly appointment. Both are available here, and you can ask about laser at your waxing appointment.

If It Is Your First Time

Nothing about this is unusual for us. Men book back and chest waxing here regularly, for the gym, for a holiday, for a wedding, or just because they are sick of asking someone else to do it with a razor.

You do not need to explain yourself, you do not need to have researched anything, and you can ask whatever you want to ask. Book the appointment, turn up, and it will be done and finished inside half an hour.

Men's Waxing: The Questions Everyone Asks

How long does my hair need to be before waxing?

About two to three weeks of growth, roughly a quarter of an inch or 5mm. If you shaved in the last few days there will not be enough for the wax to grip.

Does men’s waxing hurt?

A bit, for a second or two per section, and it fades quickly. The first appointment is usually the worst because you are braced for it. It gets easier as the regrowth comes back finer.

How long does a back wax last?

Around four to six weeks, depending on how fast your hair grows. That is compared with a day or two from shaving.

How much does men’s waxing cost?

Prices depend on the area. Back, chest and brow prices are listed above and on the booking system.

What is the aftercare?

Avoid heat, friction and fake tan for 24 to 48 hours, so no sauna, sunbeds, swimming, heavy gym or very hot showers. From 48 hours, exfoliate two or three times a week to keep ingrown hairs away.

How do I stop ingrown hairs after waxing?

Exfoliate gently two or three times a week from 48 hours after your appointment, keep the skin moisturised, and do not pick at any that appear. Regular waxing on a consistent cycle also reduces them over time.

Is it a private room?

Yes. Treatments are carried out in a private treatment room with the door closed.

Should I wax or have laser hair removal?

Waxing is lower cost per visit and needs repeating every four to six weeks. Laser is a bigger upfront commitment that gives permanent hair reduction, so significantly less hair long term. Laser only works on hair with pigment, so dark hair responds well and blonde, red or grey does not.

Do you wax men’s eyebrows?

Yes. Brows are tidied and shaped rather than reshaped into anything obvious.
