What is Cryopen?

Cryopen is a precise, medical-grade cryotherapy pen that safely removes benign skin lesions using a controlled freeze, thaw, freeze cycle.

Cryopen is a precise, medical-grade cryotherapy pen that safely removes benign skin lesions using a controlled freeze, thaw, freeze cycle. Unlike at-home kits or old-fashioned freezing sprays, Cryopen delivers the exact dose to a very small area, which means minimal damage to the surrounding skin.

“Cryopen is really safe to treat. As a registered children’s nurse, I can also treat children with warts and verrucas, and there’s no upper age limit to Cryopen.”

The actual treatment takes seconds and feels very cold, like ice. Most people find it very tolerable, and numbing cream isn’t usually needed for a single skin lesion. Your appointment lasts around 20 minutes in total, including the consultation and photographs.

Who Cryopen is right for

Cryopen is a great option if you have a skin lesion that’s catching on clothing, affecting your confidence, or simply annoying you. Common reasons clients book in include:

  • A skin tag that keeps catching on jewellery, bra straps or shaving

  • Verrucas that won’t clear with over-the-counter treatments (very common in children who go barefoot at school or swimming)

  • Age spots on the hands, face or décolletage that make skin look older than it is

  • Milia around the eyes that don’t respond to skincare

  • A cluster of skin tags in one area, sometimes caused by friction from clothing, harnesses or hormonal changes

  • Anything small and benign that’s making you self-conscious

Your first appointment starts with a proper consultation. We’ll take a look at the lesion, check your medical history and take clinical photographs so we can compare your progress at your review.

The treatment itself is quick. You’ll feel the cold sensation for a few seconds per lesion. It can feel more tender in delicate areas but is generally very well tolerated. Most single skin lesions don’t need numbing cream. Overall, expect to be in the salon for around 20 minutes.
Afterwards, the treated area may look red and feel a little itchy. That’s completely normal. Over the following one to two weeks, the lesion will typically blister, scab, crust and then fall away, revealing fresh skin underneath.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who Cryopen isn’t suitable for
>
Cryopen is very safe for most people, but it isn’t suitable in every case. We’ll ask you to speak to your GP first, or we may not treat you, if:
• You are pregnant, Cryopen isn’t generally indicated during pregnancy
• You have Raynaud’s and the lesion is on your hands or feet
• You have darker Fitzpatrick skin (types IV to VI). Cryopen is still safe, but there’s a slightly greater risk of temporary hyperpigmentation, which we’ll discuss with you at consultation
• The lesion is in a sensitive area that needs particularly careful assessment
• You’d like a mole removed. Moles should be assessed by a GP or dermatologist first, and we’ll refer you on rather than treat
If we spot anything of concern during your consultation, we’ll ask your permission to speak to your GP.
What is Cryopen?
>
Cryopen is a precise, medical-grade cryotherapy pen used to safely freeze away skin tags, warts, verrucas, milia, age spots and other benign skin lesions. The treatment uses a controlled freeze, thaw, freeze cycle that damages the lesion so your body clears it naturally over the following days.
Does Cryopen hurt?
>
Most people describe the sensation as feeling very cold, like ice, and it only lasts a few seconds. It can be more tender in delicate areas such as the face or intimate skin, but it’s generally well tolerated and numbing cream isn’t usually needed for a single lesion.
How many sessions will I need?
>
Skin tags usually only need one, sometimes two sessions. Viral lesions like verrucas and stubborn warts can take four to five sessions. Delicate areas of the face and intimate skin may need more, spaced further apart. We’ll give you a realistic session estimate at your consultation.
How much does Cryopen cost?
>
Treatment for one to three skin tags is typically £60. For larger areas or multiple lesions we quote a bespoke price at consultation, based on the size and number of lesions and canister usage. As a rule of thumb, expect £60 per treatment for up to three lesions and around £5 per additional lesion for larger areas.
Can Cryopen remove moles?
>
Moles should always be assessed by a GP or dermatologist first to rule out any risk of skin cancer. Cryopen isn’t routinely used on moles, and if you have a mole you’d like to remove, we’ll refer you to your GP or a minor surgery service.
What happens after the treatment?
>
The area may be red and a little itchy at first. Keep it clean and dry, showers and baths are fine, and you can carry on with normal activities including the gym. Most lesions will blister, scab, crust and then fall off within one to two weeks. We’ll book you a review two weeks after your appointment (or sooner if you’re at all concerned).
Who shouldn’t have Cryopen?
>
Cryopen isn’t suitable during pregnancy. Anyone with Raynaud’s should avoid treatment on hands and feet. If you have darker Fitzpatrick skin (types IV to VI), there’s a slightly greater risk of hyperpigmentation and we’ll discuss this at consultation. Lesions in sensitive areas need careful consideration. If we spot anything of concern during your consultation, we’ll ask for your permission to speak to your GP.
Is Cryopen better than at-home skin tag kits?
>
Yes, and much safer. At-home kits can cause trauma, and tying cotton around skin tags (a common home remedy) often results in swelling, infection and prolonged pain. Cryopen is precise, controlled and delivered by a trained clinician, with a review appointment built in.
