Dermal fillers have a bad reputation in the press and on social media. That reputation almost always traces back to unregistered practitioners with little or no training in facial anatomy, working from home kitchens or hair salons using unbranded product. In those hands, injecting into or near a vein or artery becomes a real risk.
At Hannah Clarke, treatment is delivered by an experienced Registered Nurse Prescriber with proper anatomical training. Most treatments are performed with a cannula (a blunt, flexible tool) rather than a sharp needle, which significantly reduces the risk of injecting into a blood vessel. And if a complication does arise, hyaluronidase can be prescribed and administered on site, immediately.

Who dermal fillers are for
Gemma's clients are historically 40 and over, often at a stage where they've started to notice mid-face volume loss, temple hollowing, thinning lips or emerging vertical lines around the mouth. Almost all want subtle volume restoration rather than dramatic change.
First-time clients are often nervous, and that's completely normal. Gemma will talk you through every step, and consent to proceed is checked again just before injection so there's never a feeling of being rushed.
How long dermal fillers last, and the 'soft and subtle' approach
Premium hyaluronic acid dermal fillers gradually dissolve over around 12 months, which is one of the reasons they're considered safer than permanent fillers, your face is never locked into a decision.
Gemma's approach is deliberately gradual: 'soft and subtle, go low and slow'. That means starting with a smaller amount, seeing how the area responds, and building on the result over time. This applies particularly to lips, where over-treatment is the most common regret in the industry.
There's a myth that dermal filler 'stretches the skin'. That is largely not true when premium HA product is used correctly and dissolved between top-ups. If lips are ever overfilled, dissolving them and then rebuilding gradually takes the lips a little while to fully adjust, which is another reason Gemma prefers the gradual build over ambitious first treatments.

- V300 Independent Prescribing qualification, the senior clinical qualification that allows Gemma to consult, prescribe and administer, independently and without a separate prescriber.
- Trained at Northwest Aesthetics and Dr. Hennessy Aesthetics, with regular ongoing training to maintain competence.
- 5+ years injecting dermal filler, performing treatments on a daily basis.
- Able to prescribe hyaluronidase (the enzyme that dissolves hyaluronic acid filler) on site, in case of complications. Not every filler injector can do this.

Aftercare and downtime
>Immediately after treatment you can expect some swelling, bruising, redness and tenderness. That settles over the following days, and the true result of your treatment shows around the 2-week mark once everything has fully calmed down.
For the first 4 hours:
- No make-up on the treated area
- Don't touch, rub or apply pressure to the treated area
For the first 24 hours:
- No exercise or anything that raises your heart rate significantly
- No alcohol
Because there's a swelling and bruising window, Gemma recommends not booking treatment within 2 to 4 weeks of a major event (wedding, holiday, big work meeting). You'll notice an immediate improvement, but the best version of your result appears around 2 weeks.
Does it hurt?
>The area is numbed with a numbing cream that contains lidocaine, and the filler itself also contains lidocaine, which makes injection significantly more comfortable. Most clients describe the sensation as small pinches or mild pressure rather than sharp pain, and the experience depends on the area being treated. Lips are the most sensitive area but manageable with the numbing protocol.

What's vascular occlusion?

If any signs are present, she can prescribe and administer hyaluronidase immediately.
Can I have dermal filler on antibiotics?
>Not without guidance from your GP or consultant. Gemma will need their consent, and possibly a pause in the medication for a few days, before proceeding.
How long should I wait after dental work before lip filler?
>Gemma will not perform lip filler within 2 weeks before or 2 weeks after any dental treatment. This reduces the risk of infection or complications.
Can I have dermal filler and anti-wrinkle injections at the same appointment?
>Yes, this is often a great combination. Gemma will discuss the right sequencing at consultation.
