What is manual lymphatic drainage?

Manual lymphatic drainage (often shortened to MLD) is a specialist massage technique designed to support your lymphatic system. Unlike a deep tissue or sports massage, the pressure is extremely light, slow, rhythmic, almost feathery strokes that follow the path of your lymph vessels and encourage fluid to drain towards your lymph nodes.

“Manual lymphatic drainage is a very gentle, strokey massage style treatment. We don’t apply deep pressure, it’s incredibly light, and it’s just helping our lymphatic system do its correct job and drain to the lymph nodes.”

Your lymphatic system is arguably one of the most important systems in your body. It carries waste, toxins and excess fluid out of your tissues, keeps inflammation in check and supports your immune system. But unlike your circulatory system, which has the heart as a pump, your lymphatic system has no pump of its own. It relies on movement, breathing, hydration and good habits. When those aren’t enough, hands-on therapy is what gets it moving again.

The benefits of lymphatic drainage massage

A regular manual lymphatic drainage session can:
• Reduce bloating and fluid retention, particularly in the legs, ankles, stomach and face.
• Support post-surgical recovery, helping clear swelling, ease bruising and speed up healing.
• Calm your nervous system, because your lymphatic and nervous systems are closely linked, easing one helps the other.
• Boost your immune system, by moving lymphatic fluid more efficiently to its filtration points.
• Brighten your skin, by clearing stagnant fluid from the face and neck.
• Support recovery from stress and trauma, when stored trauma effectively switches off the lymphatic system, hands-on drainage helps restart it.
• Ease puffiness, especially in the face, ankles and fingers.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is manual lymphatic drainage massage?
>
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a specialist, very gentle massage that uses slow, rhythmic strokes to help your lymphatic system move waste, toxins and excess fluid out of your tissues. The pressure is light and feathery, nothing like a deep tissue massage.
Does lymphatic drainage massage actually work?
>
Yes, when delivered correctly. Your lymphatic system has no pump of its own, so it depends on movement, breathing and hands-on support to flow properly. A skilled MLD therapist works with the natural path of your lymph vessels to drain fluid towards your lymph nodes, where it’s filtered and returned through the circulatory system. Most clients feel lighter, less
How often should I have lymphatic drainage massage?
>
If you’re working on an active issue, bloating, swelling, sluggish lymph, we’d typically recommend weekly sessions for two to four weeks until you feel on top of it, then a maintenance session once a month. If you’re coming for general wellbeing, monthly is plenty.
Can I have lymphatic drainage massage after surgery?
>
Yes, and current guidance is to begin almost immediately, but with the right oversight. If your surgical clinic has a lymphatic nurse on the team, we’d ask you to start with them until you’re signed off as clear of infection. From there we typically work weekly (sometimes twice weekly) for three to four weeks, then move into maintenance. We will always ask for medical clearance before starting post-surgical work.
Can I have lymphatic drainage massage before surgery?
>
Yes, and it’s genuinely useful. When your lymphatic system is working well going into surgery, your body has more capacity to heal and repair afterwards. It’s the simplest way of getting ahead of the curve before an operation.
What are the signs my lymphatic system isn’t working properly?
>
Common signs include persistent bloating, a puffy face (especially in the morning), swollen ankles or fingers, recurring skin rashes, slow healing, frequent colds, and a general heavy, sluggish feeling that doesn’t lift.
Can lymphatic drainage massage help with stress, anxiety or stored trauma?
>
Often, yes. Your lymphatic system and nervous system are closely linked. Long-term stress, depression and unresolved trauma can effectively switch the lymphatic system off, which leaves you feeling rubbish in your body even when nothing’s clinically wrong. A gentle, hands-on treatment like MLD helps calm the nervous system and restart lymph flow at the same time.
