Treatment for Excessive Sweating

Excessive sweating is treatable with small injections of botulinum toxin type A into the affected area, most commonly the underarms. The injections temporarily block the nerve signals that switch the sweat glands on, so the area produces significantly less sweat.

It is the same active ingredient used in anti-wrinkle injections, used for a very different purpose. For people whose sweating affects what they wear, how they sit in meetings, or whether they raise their arms, it can be the treatment that changes the day-to-day.

At Hannah Clarke Advanced Skin and Beauty in Rainford, treatment is carried out by Gemma, a registered nurse of 12+ years and an Independent Nurse Prescriber.

If your sweating has come on suddenly, happens mainly at night, or is affecting one side of the body only, please see your GP first. Sweating can occasionally be a sign of something that needs investigating rather than treating.

Who it helps, and what to expect

This is a treatment for people whose sweating is beyond what antiperspirants can manage.

Most people who ask about it have already tried clinical-strength antiperspirants and found they are not enough. The sweating affects clothing choices, it shows in photographs, and it is a background worry in situations where it should not be.

The injections are placed just under the skin across the affected area, using a very fine needle. It is a quick treatment.

Because botulinum toxin type A is a Prescription-Only Medicine, everything starts with a consultation. Gemma is an Independent Nurse Prescriber, so she can consult, prescribe and treat rather than sending you elsewhere for a prescription first.

Underarms are the most common area. Speak to Gemma at consultation about anywhere else you are considering.

Your consultation and your appointment

Botulinum toxin type A is a Prescription-Only Medicine, so treatment always starts with a consultation and a prescription rather than a walk-in appointment.

Every appointment follows the same sequence, and it starts before anything is injected.

  • Your medical history is checked again, in case anything has changed since your consultation.
  • Consent is confirmed, so you are asked again whether you still wish to go ahead.
  • Photographs are taken for your medical records. Gemma will ask you to frown, relax, smile and raise your eyebrows so she can see how the muscles actually move.
  • The injection points are marked up, then treated with a very fine needle.

The injections themselves take a few minutes. The whole appointment is around 20 to 30 minutes.

Nothing is visible immediately. Most of the botulinum toxin is taken up into the muscle within the first 20 minutes. For the first four hours, no makeup, and avoid excessive bending or lying down. After that you can carry on as normal.

Who cannot have it. Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, anyone with an infection at the injection site, and anyone under 18. A neuromuscular disorder or ongoing chemotherapy needs a more in-depth consultation rather than ruling treatment out automatically.

If your sweating is sudden in onset, mostly nocturnal, or one-sided, see your GP before booking a cosmetic treatment for it.

Meet Gemma, Independent Nurse Prescriber

Treatment is delivered by Gemma, and her credentials matter when the product going into your face is a Prescription-Only Medicine.

- Registered nurse for 12+ years, NMC registered and working to the NMC Code of Conduct.
- Independent Nurse Prescriber (INP). Gemma consults, prescribes and administers herself, which means no separate prescriber and a much shorter journey for you.
- Foundation and advanced trained in botulinum toxin type A specifically.
- Member of ACE Complications Management, the UK-wide network for managing rare adverse events.
- Member of BMAN, the British Medical Aesthetic Nurses group.

All products are sourced from licensed UK pharmacies, and Gemma writes the prescription herself, so there is a documented prescription for the exact product used in your treatment.

Gemma will not treat anyone she does not believe is a good candidate. That includes anyone under 21, anyone with unrealistic expectations, and anyone she does not think will follow the aftercare.
