A Lip Flip in Rainford, St Helens

A lip flip is a very small dose of botulinum toxin type A placed in the muscle just above the top lip. As that muscle relaxes, the edge of the lip rolls very slightly outward, so more of the lip shows when you smile and talk.

It does not add any volume. Nothing is filled. It changes how the lip you already have sits, which is why it appeals to people who want a subtle difference rather than a noticeably fuller lip.

At Hannah Clarke Advanced Skin and Beauty in Rainford, it is carried out by Gemma, a registered nurse of 12+ years and an Independent Nurse Prescriber. Because Gemma can consult, prescribe and treat, most clients are seen within a couple of days of their consultation.

Lip flip or lip filler?

They are two different treatments that get confused constantly, and they suit different people.

A lip flip uses botulinum toxin to relax the muscle above the lip, so the lip rolls outward and shows more. There is no volume added at all. It is subtle, it wears off, and it is the right choice if you like the size of your lips but want a little more shape when you smile.

Lip filler uses hyaluronic acid to add actual volume, structure and definition. It is the right choice if you want your lips to be bigger, more balanced, or reshaped.

They are not competing options so much as answers to different questions. At your consultation Gemma will ask what you are actually hoping to change, and tell you honestly which one gets you there. Sometimes the answer is neither.

If it is volume you are after, dermal fillers are the treatment to look at.

Your consultation and your appointment

Botulinum toxin type A is a Prescription-Only Medicine, so a lip flip always starts with a consultation and a prescription rather than a walk-in appointment.

Every appointment follows the same sequence, and it starts before anything is injected.

  • Your medical history is checked again, in case anything has changed since your consultation.
  • Consent is confirmed, so you are asked again whether you still wish to go ahead.
  • Photographs are taken for your medical records. Gemma will ask you to frown, relax, smile and raise your eyebrows so she can see how the muscles actually move.
  • The injection points are marked up, then treated with a very fine needle.

The injections themselves take a few minutes. The whole appointment is around 20 to 30 minutes.

Nothing is visible immediately. Most of the botulinum toxin is taken up into the muscle within the first 20 minutes. For the first four hours, no makeup, and avoid excessive bending or lying down. After that you can carry on as normal.

Who cannot have it. Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, anyone with an infection at the injection site, and anyone under 18. Gemma will not inject anyone under 21. A neuromuscular disorder or ongoing chemotherapy needs a more in-depth consultation rather than ruling treatment out automatically.

She will also decline to treat anyone she believes may be experiencing body dysmorphia, anyone with unrealistic expectations, and anyone she does not think will follow the aftercare.

Treatment is delivered by Gemma, and her credentials matter when the product going into your face is a Prescription-Only Medicine.

- Registered nurse for 12+ years, NMC registered and working to the NMC Code of Conduct.
- Independent Nurse Prescriber (INP). Gemma consults, prescribes and administers herself, which means no separate prescriber and a much shorter journey for you.

All products are sourced from licensed UK pharmacies, and Gemma writes the prescription herself, so there is a documented prescription for the exact product used in your treatment.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a lip flip?
>
A very small dose of botulinum toxin type A placed in the muscle just above the top lip. As the muscle relaxes, the edge of the lip rolls slightly outward so more of it shows when you smile and talk. No volume is added.
Is a lip flip the same as lip filler?
>
No. A lip flip relaxes the muscle above the lip so it rolls outward. Lip filler adds actual volume with hyaluronic acid. If you want your lips to look bigger, filler is the treatment. If you like your lip size but want more shape when you smile, a lip flip is the one.
Will it make my lips look bigger?
>
Not in the sense of adding volume. It shows more of the lip you already have. The change is deliberately subtle, which is the point of it.
How much does it cost?
>
Pricing depends on the area being treated and the dose needed, so it is confirmed at your consultation rather than listed as a single figure.
Who will be treating me?
>
Gemma, a registered nurse of 12+ years and an Independent Nurse Prescriber, foundation and advanced trained in botulinum toxin type A. She is a member of ACE Complications Management and BMAN.
What happens at the appointment?
>
Your medical history is checked, consent is confirmed, photographs are taken for your records, and Gemma asks you to frown, relax, smile and raise your eyebrows so she can see the movement. The injection points are then marked and treated with a very fine needle. The injections take a few minutes and the appointment is around 20 to 30 minutes.
What is the aftercare?
>
No makeup for four hours, and avoid excessive bending or lying down for the first four hours. After that you can carry on as normal.
Who cannot have this treatment?
>
Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, anyone with an infection at the injection site, and anyone under 18. Gemma will not inject anyone under 21. A neuromuscular disorder or ongoing chemotherapy needs a more in-depth consultation rather than ruling treatment out automatically.
Do I need a consultation first?
>
Yes. Botulinum toxin type A is a Prescription-Only Medicine, so treatment starts with a consultation and a prescription. Because Gemma is an Independent Nurse Prescriber she can consult, prescribe and treat, so most clients are seen within a couple of days of consultation.
