Lip filler is hyaluronic acid placed in and around the lips to add volume, definition and shape. Because hyaluronic acid is something your body already produces, it integrates with your own tissue, and it can be dissolved if you ever want it gone.

Soft and subtle, built over time
The fastest way to end up with lips you do not like is to try to get there in one appointment.
Gemma's phrase for it is "soft and subtle, go low and slow". Rather than filling to the finished result on day one, she builds up across treatments, so you can see how your lips settle and decide whether you want more.
That matters for a reason people rarely explain. Good quality filler gradually dissolves on its own over about twelve months. If lips have been repeatedly overfilled and then dissolved, they can take a while to adjust afterwards. Building slowly avoids ever getting to that point.
On the question of whether filler stretches the lips permanently, that is largely a myth. A premium product placed properly should gradually dissolve by itself. The problem people have seen is not filler as a treatment, it is filler placed too much and too fast.
If what you want is more shape when you smile rather than more volume, a lip flip is a different treatment and may be the better answer.
Safety, honestly
Most people asking about filler are really asking about safety, so here is the honest version.
Mild effects are normal. Bruising and swelling after treatment are expected rather than a problem.
Infection is uncommon and usually avoidable. The procedure is as sterile as it can be and the skin is thoroughly cleansed. Where infection does occur it generally follows aftercare being ignored, most often makeup going on the area too soon. That is why Gemma asks you not to rub or touch the area for the first four hours.
Vascular occlusion is the serious one. It is where filler blocks an artery supplying the treated area. It is rare, and in Gemma's words it is usually a problem of unsafe hands. If left unrecognised it can lead to tissue necrosis, which is what people have seen on social media and in the papers. That outcome almost always traces back to a practitioner who did not react quickly enough, or who sent the client away without properly explaining aftercare.
Gemma will not let you leave the clinic if she has any concern about occlusion. After treatment she assesses the colour of your skin and any pain you are experiencing, and she is looking at the treated area specifically before she is happy for you to go home. If a complication did occur, hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved immediately, and beyond some bruising there would be no lasting result.

How long does lip filler last?
>Softer filler, which is what lips and lip lines are treated with, tends to last six to nine months. Thicker filler used in areas like cheeks, chin and jaw lasts closer to twelve months. To maintain a result most people return around every twelve months.
Does lip filler stretch your lips?
>Largely a myth. A good quality product gradually dissolves by itself over around twelve months. The issue people have seen comes from lips being repeatedly overfilled, and then needing time to adjust after being dissolved. Building slowly avoids that.
Will my lips look obviously done?

Can lip filler be dissolved?

What is the aftercare?
>No makeup on the area for four hours, no rubbing or touching the area for four hours, and no exercise or alcohol for the first 24 hours.
How soon before an event should I have it done?
>Leave two to four weeks. You will see an immediate improvement, but swelling and bruising need time to settle and the result is better at two weeks.
